“Sake Makes People Grow Up”

Naruto no Imoya、 which looks down on the city of Naruto from atop the slightly elevated industrial area where it is built、 is a brewery that began with a cold start、 something extremely rare in this industry. It seems that they are the first brewery in 65 years to be granted the right to brew sake using only materials produced in Naruto City. They are a company that initially became famous making processed foods、 such as freeze-dried candied sweet potatoes and potato paste、 from the local sweet potatoes called “Naruto kintoki.” They are now working on health foods made from Naruto kintoki and developing a “potato vinegar” that does not turn to black vinegar.

Mr. Arai、 the production director says that they are just in their second year of their new endeavor of making shochu. Coming from Tokushima City、 he initially had no ties whatsoever to brewing、 but came into the company of his wife’s father upon marrying and was entrusted with making the alcohol there. So he tells us brightly at the age of 29. He continues on with a smile that though he used to commute to school while sporting a Mohawk、 his life turned around 180 degrees when karma started him down this road、 and now he can’t help it、 but he really enjoys brewing alcohol.

His other hobby outside of work is raising his children. He is blessed with two wonderful children (4 and 3 years old)、 and on days off he takes them out to the suburbs of Naruto、 where there is still plenty of nature around. There they enjoy such things as fishing for medaka (killifish) and dojo (loach)、 or catching beetles. He also has one other reason for living. “Doing my best to reach out a hand to help these young、 innocent kids – it feels just like making sake. It surprises me to think how much I have changed through doing this job.” So says the young father whose impression makes you believe that he really will do an excellent job in both raising children and making shochu.

“Naruto’s Sekihan (steamed rice mixed with red beans)”

“I was surprised when I came to Naruto because I found that people here pour sugar on top of their sekihan when they eat it、”
said the obviously disgusted Production Director Arii of Naruto no Imoya. It’s probably the same in all of your towns、 but in Mr. Arii’s hometown of Tokushima City and in Kagawa Prefecture、 both of which sandwich Naruto between them、 it’s normal to eat sekihan with black sesame and salt. But it seems that only in the singular location of Naruto do they eat it with white sesame and sugar. Is that allowed? Chalk it up to the strange tastes of the locals of Naruto. But that being said、 President Matsuura of The Original Matsuura Brewery、 which lies on Naruto’s border with Kitajima-cho、 also says、 “For some reason、 Naruto’s food culture is uniquely weird.” From now on、 when we meet someone from Naruto、 let's do a little experiment and ask them whether or not they eat their sekihan with sugar.

A quick challenge: sekihan is something that you eat at home、 so it’s not on the menu at restaurants. Therefore、 I went to the convenience store、 bought a sekihan rice ball、 poured some white sesame and sugar on it and gave it a try. It was not so bad – kind of like a sweet snack – but not the sekihan that I’m used to. “What do these people in Naruto eat with their sugary sekihan anyway? It certainly would not go well with sashimi...、”as I was thinking this、 I slowly started to understand why people here like this flavor combination.

In today’s food scene in Japan、 the flavors of cup-noodles from western Japan and eastern Japan are slightly different. Is the day close at hand that the convenience stores in Nartuo might begin to sell sugar-coated sekihan rice balls?

Postscript:
I heard a rumor that the okonomiyaki in Naruto has “kintoki mame” (red beans cooked in sugar) in it. And if you consider all this along with “Naruto udon” (please refer to the “Word of the Day” column for the 2nd site in the previous post)、 then you could really probably say that Naruto is a veritable Galapagos of Japanese food culture.
